One of our guiding principles at The Play Lab is, "We take care of each other." That includes taking care of one another's safety.
As many of you know, we've recently seen an uptick in some of our Explorers walking off during transitions, opening and closing the gate, walking out the front door, and even leaving the Play Lab premises without a grownup's knowledge.
I am a big fan of independent expression. We encourage children to make choices, solve problems, and grow in confidence. At the same time, another saying you'll often hear at The Play Lab is, "We are safe first."
There is a difference between agency and behaving in ways that are unsafe. Walking away without a trusted grownup knowing where you are is simply not something we can do.
Because this is happening primarily during transitions, I'm asking for your partnership. Please continue talking with your child about the importance of staying where a grownup can see or hear them while they play. Help them understand that being safe also means not walking out of a house, through a gate, or out a door without an adult's knowledge.
Most importantly, please remain consistent. We want this to be more than a Play Lab expectation—we want it to become a life skill that children carry with them wherever they go.
Thank you for helping us take care of one another and keep our community safe.
